MEWPs (Boom Type) Harness Use

This mandatory standard must be applied at all construction locations.

• Operators working in the basket of a boom type MEWP must wear a full body harness and restraint lanyard short enough for the wearer to be restrained within the platform.
• This includes static booms (Category 1b) and mobile booms (3b).
• Lanyards must only be connected to the dedicated anchorage point within the machine.
• If working near to, or over water, a risk assessment must be undertaken to determine whether the greater risk to the operative is falling from the basket or drowning, before deciding that harnesses are not required. (See HSE GIS06 for further guidance).
